Educational Assessment

(Specific Learning Disorders e.g., dyslexia, dyscalculia)

Part of our Child and Adolescent Psychometric Assessment Services

An educational assessment is an assessment that is completed to help understand academic performance. Educational assessments involve a comprehensive interview with the child’s parent, review of school reports, cognitive testing (such as WISC-V) to determine their intellectual functioning, and an academic test (such as the WIAT-III) to understand their performance across academic tasks.

The primary goal of an educational assessment is to understand the student's strengths and weaknesses in various academic areas such as reading, reading comprehension, writing, spelling and mathematics, in order to make informed decisions about their educational progress and needs. An educational assessment can also identify possible underlying specific learning disorders such as dyslexia or dyscalculia.

What is an assessment for dyslexia?

Specific Learning Disorder is an umbrella term diagnosis that has numerous specific academic challenges underneath it, depending on the presentation of the child. Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder, characterised by challenges in precise and fluent word reading, along with poor spelling and decoding skills that do not improve despite focused intervention efforts.

An assessment for dyslexia involves cognitive and academic testing, as well as gathering information from parents, teachers, and school reports. This in-depth assessment examines all cognitive and academic domains to determine whether a child's struggles are primarily focused on reading and spelling or extend to other areas as well.

What is an assessment for dyscalculia?

Dyscalculia is a specific learning disorder with impairment understanding numbers and working mathematically.

An assessment for dyscalculia involves cognitive and academic testing, as well as gathering information from parents, teachers, and school reports. This in-depth assessment examines all cognitive and academic domains to determine whether a child's struggles are primarily focused on mathematics or extend to other areas as well.
